ワイキキは、山に降り注いだ雨が大地に浸み込み、海へ流れ、そして地中から水が湧き出る場所であることから「湧き水」という意味を持つ「waikiki」と名付けられました。本計画地も水の通り道となっており、その流れをなぞるようにチャペルのバージンロードを設けました。透明感のあるハワイの石やガラスを素材とし、海に向かって緩やかな曲線を描いたパターンをバージンロードにあしらいました。本計画地はアウトリガーカヌークラブの跡地に建てられたホテルです。アウトリガーカヌーは2つ並んだ船体を特徴とします。しなやかで力強いマストや風を受けやわらかに広がる帆を持つ船の姿からデザインエッセンスを抽出しシャンデリアに注ぎ込みました。室内に散りばめられた木製の装飾は、波や水面の表情をモチーフにディティールをデザインしました。ハワイの瑞々しい風土や文化を尊重し、穏やかでやさしい空間となるようデザインしました。Waikiki derives its name from the Hawaiian word “wai kīkī,” meaning “spouting water,” referring to a place where rain falling on the mountains permeates the land, flows toward the sea, and resurfaces as freshwater springs. The project site lies along a natural waterway. Tracing this flow, we designed the chapel’s aisle to follow a gentle current through the space. Materials such as translucent Hawaiian stone and glass were selected to evoke clarity and light. The aisle is patterned with a soft curve that gradually extends toward the ocean, suggesting the quiet movement of water. The hotel stands on the former site of the Outrigger Canoe Club. The traditional outrigger canoe, characterized by its twin hulls, embodies both suppleness and strength. From its tall mast and sails that expand gracefully in the wind, we extracted design elements and translated them into the form of the chandelier. Wooden details throughout the interior draw inspiration from the textures of waves and the shifting surface of water. Respecting Hawaii’s vibrant climate and cultural heritage, the space was designed to foster a calm, gentle atmosphere.
