Fukuoka has long served as a gateway to Asia, where diverse cultures have intersected and overlapped throughout history. This lack of rigid boundaries and the resulting ambiguity have become a key source of the city’s unique character. This project seeks to spatially manifest that sense of “ambiguity” through the configuration of tenant spaces.By blurring the boundary between common areas—such as corridors—and individual tenant units, the design creates an environment in which multiple programs and people intermingle within a single spatial continuum. The goal is to form a lively and active “urban engawa”: an ambiguous, in-between space that encourages interaction and coexistence, reflecting the energetic and inclusive nature of the city.
